|
Most people know about the legendary reliability and power of the IBM iSeries, (AS/400) but the current generation of iSeries can do far more than just run your legacy applications securely, reliably, and fast. It provides a single platform that lets you enhance your existing applications, build new ones, integrate to your network, extend your programs to the Web, and much more. Here are just a few examples of the iSeries built-in capabilities. All of these are standard on the iSeries and require no additional software to accomplish.
Net Server Included with the iSeries is the ability for it to act as a file and printer server for your PC network. This ability lets the iSeries look like a mapped drive to your PC's. You can store your critical PC data on the iSeries and it automatically gets backed up when you do your iSeries backups. With dual Gigabit Ethernet ports on the iSeries you get fast, reliable central storage for your PC network data.
When using Net Server you also get full administrative security for your network. From one screen you are able to permit or deny access to programs, libraries, objects, even individual files for each user on both the iSeries data and stored PC data.
iSeries Access Installing iSeries access on a PC allows it to communicate with the iSeries. Whether it is locally attached, over the Internet, or even dialed in over a phone line, you get the same functionality. This means your DP people can check jobs from home, your salesmen can connect in while on the road, and remote offices can connect in without costly servers or controllers. You can even give trusted vendors or customers limited access if you wish. Another function of iSeries access is its ability to upload and download data to and from your iSeries into PC spreadsheets such as Excel or word processing programs such as Word. This gives you the ability to use this data in different ways. You can also upload data such as purchased customer lists, product catalogs etc from your PC (or the internet) into your iSeries applications.
iSeries Access for the web iSeries access for the web extends the ability to selectively connect to your iSeries from ANY internet connected PC's, merely by giving your employees, customers or vendors a user ID and password. They can access any part of your system you select. For example, customers can access order history or account receivables, but only their records, no other customers. Employees can access from customers PC's or public PC's such as in libraries or Internet cafes. You have complete security control of what they can or cannot access. Employees can work from home, remote jobsites, or even on the road.
Websphere Application Server Express Standard with all iSeries is Websphere Application Server Express. This is a set of programs that make it easy to deliver web content from your iSeries to your website. Projects such as posting your in stock inventory from the iSeries to your website on a real time basis are a simple process. Or, setting up password controlled point and click access to specific data in your iSeries can be accomplished by using a portal, which doesn't even require any familiarity with green screen environment. You can set up customer specific price lists, allow your customers to select products, or place orders all from a website look and feel.
iSeries Tools The iSeries comes standard with a wide array of tools that enhance the ability to modify, update, or create new applications. Whether you have programmers on-staff, or use outside consultants, included tools such as OS/400 Query, Websphere Design Studio. DB2 Query and SQL Toolkit will help your projects get done faster and more efficiently, meaning less cost to you.
The iSeries is truly the platform that can do it all. When you get to the point where you want to run multiple languages, the iSeries supports Linux, Unix, Aix, Java, Windows, RPG, Cobol, and more. And when your company grows, the iSeries will grow with you. It is completely scalable with the same OS used from the very smallest servers to enormous servers with mainframe class power.
