Power7 Servers - More than just i

Most people know about the legendary reliability and power of the IBM iSeries, but the current generation of Power7 servers can do far more than just run your legacy applications securely, reliably, and fast.  It provides a single platform that lets you enhance your existing applications, build new ones, integrate to your network, extend your programs to the Web, consolidate workloads, and much more.

Even the smallest Power7 servers come with a minimum of 4 processors, each with many times the processing power of prior generations of iSeries and AS/400.   This not only allows your current applications to run faster and more efficiently, but also provides a platform that can run many types of other applications which reduces hardware costs, server sprawl, network management costs, backup complexity, and simplifies infrastructure.  The best news is that the new Power7 Servers will normally be less expensive than any prior iSeries or AS/400 you have purchased.  The 3 year cost of a new Power7 server is often less than just the hardware and software maintenance costs of a prior generation iSeries.

Linux on Power7

One of the best ways to take advantage of the extra processors and power of the IBM Power7 servers is by running Linux workloads.  With Linux, you can add or replace current workloads with inexpensive or free Linux applications.  Today, you don't have to be a Linux expert.  There are a variety of GUI front ends for Linux which eliminate the need to know Linux command line structure or any programming.  They provide a look and feel that is very similar to Windows.  There are Linux equivalents for almost any application you might want to run including File and Print serving, Email and Exchange, Domain and DNS  controllers, CRM, Business intelligence, Document management, and many, many more.  Many applications can be downloaded and used at no cost, or at a price that is far less than their Windows counterparts.

iSeries Access

Installing iSeries Access on a PC allows it to communicate with Power7 running iOS.  Whether it is locally attached, over the Internet, or even dialed in over a phone line, you get the same functionality.  This means your DP people can check jobs from home, your salesmen can connect in while on the road, and remote offices can connect in without costly servers or controllers.  You can even give trusted vendors or customers limited access if you wish.

Another function of iSeries Access is its ability to upload and download data to and from iOS into PC spreadsheets such as Excel or word processing programs such as Word.  This gives you the ability to use this data in different ways.  You can also upload data such as purchased customer lists, product catalogs etc. from your PC (or the internet) into your iOS applications.

iSeries Access for the web

iSeries access for the web extends the ability to selectively connect to your server from ANY internet connected PC's, PDA's, or smart phones merely by giving your employees, customers or vendors a user ID and password.  They can access any part of your system you select.  For example, customers can access order history or account receivables, but only their records, no other customers.  Employees can access from customers PC's or public PC's such as in libraries or Internet cafes, or from virtually any wireless device.  You have complete security control of what they can or cannot access. Employees can work from home, remote jobsites, or even on the road.

Websphere Application Server

Standard with all Power7 servers is Websphere Application Server.  This is a set of programs that make it easy to host your own website, or deliver web content from your server to your existing website.  Projects such as posting your in-stock inventory from the server to your website on a real time basis are a simple process.  Or, setting up password controlled point and click access to specific data in your server can be accomplished by using a portal, which doesn't even require any familiarity with green screen environment.  You can set up customer specific price lists, allow your customers to select products or place orders all from a website look and feel.

Tools

The iOS operating system comes with a wide array of tools that enhance the ability to modify, update, or create new applications.   Whether you have programmers on staff, or use outside consultants, included tools such as Web Query, Rational, Websphere Development Studio. DB2 Query and SQL Toolkit will help your projects get done faster and more efficiently, meaning less cost to you.

The Power7 Server family is truly the platform that can do it all.   In addition to running iOS, you can run Linux, Unix, Aix, Java, , RPG, Cobol, and more.  And as your companies IT needs change, the Power7 has the flexibility and capability to handle the changing workloads and demands.  It is completely scalable with the same OS used from the very smallest servers to enormous servers with mainframe class power.
